Lost money in a UPI fraud? Act fast, because speed decides whether you get it back. If you report within the first hour, the police and banks can often freeze the money before the fraudster moves it. This guide gives you the exact steps, the RBI rules that protect you, and what to expect at each stage.

⚡ UPI fraud: what to do right now

  • Within minutes: Call the national cyber fraud helpline 1930.
  • Same day: File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in and inform your bank.
  • Within 3 working days: Report to your bank in writing. For unauthorised transactions, your liability can be zero.
  • Block: Your UPI ID, card and net banking if your phone or PIN was compromised.
  • Keep proof: Screenshots, transaction IDs, the caller’s number and UPI ID.
UPI fraud: how to get your money back in India

Step 1: Call 1930 in the golden hour

The 1930 helpline is run under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). When you call, the helpline shares your complaint with the banks and wallets involved. As a result, they can put a hold on the money in the receiver’s account if the fraudster has not withdrawn it yet. This is why the first hour matters so much.

Keep these details ready: your bank name, transaction ID (UTR), amount, date and time, and the receiver’s UPI ID or phone number.

Step 2: File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in

Next, register the UPI fraud complaint online at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Choose “Report other cyber crime”, then “Financial fraud”. Upload screenshots and note the acknowledgment number. You will need it for your bank and, later, for getting frozen money released.

Step 3: Report the UPI fraud to your bank

Call your bank’s helpline about the UPI fraud and also send a written complaint by email or through the app. Ask the bank to block your UPI, card and net banking if your PIN or phone may be exposed. Also raise a dispute inside your UPI app: open the transaction and tap “Help” or “Raise a complaint”.

RBI’s zero liability rule: when your bank must refund you

RBI’s 2017 circular on customer liability protects UPI fraud victims in unauthorised electronic transactions, meaning payments you did not make or approve.

When you reportYour maximum loss
Bank’s own fault (system breach, error)₹0, whenever you report
Third-party breach, reported within 3 working days₹0
Third-party breach, reported in 4–7 working daysUp to ₹5,000 (basic savings), ₹10,000 (most savings accounts and cards up to ₹5 lakh limit), ₹25,000 (current accounts and higher-limit cards)
After 7 working daysAs per your bank’s board-approved policy
You shared your PIN or OTPYou bear the loss until you report it

Under the same circular, the bank must credit the disputed amount (a “shadow reversal”) within 10 working days of your report, and resolve the complaint within 90 days.

RBI zero liability: report within 3 days and lose nothing

The hard truth: when you approved the payment yourself

Most UPI scams trick you into entering your own PIN, for example a fake “receive money” request, a fake buyer on OLX, or a “digital arrest” call. In these cases, the bank treats the payment as one you approved, so the zero liability rule usually does not apply. Your best chance of recovery is then the 1930 freeze and the police complaint. That is exactly why speed matters.

Remember one rule: you never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money.

How frozen money comes back to you

If your 1930 call or UPI fraud complaint led to a freeze, the money stays on hold in the receiving account. To release it, you usually need the police FIR or complaint, your acknowledgment number and an application to the bank or court. It can take weeks or months, so follow up in writing and keep every reference number.

If the bank does not help

  1. Wait 30 days after your written UPI fraud complaint, or act sooner if the bank rejects it.
  2. File a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
  3. Attach your bank complaint, the cybercrime acknowledgment and all screenshots.

How to stay safe from UPI scams

  • Never share your UPI PIN, OTP or screen with anyone, including “bank officials”.
  • Do not install screen-sharing apps like AnyDesk on a caller’s request.
  • Police and CBI never arrest anyone on a video call. Read our report on the digital arrest scam and the Supreme Court’s view.
  • Set a lower daily UPI limit in your app to cap any UPI fraud loss if you rarely make large payments.
