Frequently asked questions
Which tax regime is better for me?
If your total deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest etc.) are small, the new regime is usually better. If you claim large deductions — typically more than ₹4–5 lakh combined — the old regime can still win. The calculator above compares both for your exact numbers.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?
Yes, under the new regime the 87A rebate makes taxable income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free. For salaried people, adding the ₹75,000 standard deduction means salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Marginal relief applies just above ₹12 lakh.
Did Budget 2026 change the slabs?
No. Budget 2026 kept the same slabs, standard deduction and rebate. The new Income Tax Act, 2025 takes effect from 1 April 2026, which changes section numbers but not these rates.
Is cess included?
Yes. A 4% Health & Education Cess is added on income tax plus surcharge. Surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh income (capped at 25% in the new regime).
